From Iceland — Tropical Storm Headed For Iceland

Tropical Storm Headed For Iceland

Published September 10, 2012

Tropical storm Leslie is currently making its way north, and could reach Iceland by the end of the week.
The storm, which originated in the Caribbean, has been arching its way in a northeasterly direction over the past several days. According to data from the US National Hurricane Center, it will be swinging past the the mid-Atlantic region of the US this morning. From there, should it maintain or gather strength, it could reach past Newfoundland by Tuesday morning and the south coast of Iceland by early Thursday morning.
The USNHC estimates that over the open ocean, Leslie could gain hurricane strength. By the time Leslie reaches Iceland, if it remains a tropical storm, it could bring with it winds between 63 and 117 KPH (39 – 73 MPH).
Whether or not it gains full hurricane strength, Leslie is forecast to strengthen as it makes its way north. There is, however, no predicting how strong or weak Leslie will be by the time it reaches Iceland. Tropical storms are a rarity this far north.
The current high winds and rains of about 24 m/s are not related to Leslie, but are expected to continue through the evening.
