From Iceland — Steingrímur Wernersson's House Gets Hit Again

Steingrímur Wernersson’s House Gets Hit Again

Published December 14, 2009

The home of financier Steingrímur Wernersson was once again hit by vandals, in a repeat of an attack that took place last September.
In e-mails sent to the Grapevine from an anonymous source, the photos show Wernersson’s house sprayed with red paint, possibly from a high-powered paint gun. The e-mails, bearing photos (one of which is shown above) which the sender also said had not been published anywhere else, also said, “Worth mentioning that outside his house are nine security cameras, plus two extra if you look inside the windows.”
Steingrímur Wernersson was vice chairman of Askar Capital, an investment firm majority owned by Glitnir Bank and which had ties to at least one Independence Party MP. Last summer the homes and cars of a number of financiers, or simply people with large, expensive cars, were hit by similar styles of vandalism, including Wernersson’s brother, Karl, who was chairman of Askar. The probable motivation for the attacks is growing frustration among Icelanders as the financial crisis continues, while the major players who had a hand in creating it remain unscathed by the law.
