From Iceland — Protesters Confront Arriving MPs

Protesters Confront Arriving MPs

Published October 1, 2011

Parliament convened for a new session at 10:30 this morning, and members of the general public were on the scene to greet arriving members of parliament with boos and flying eggs. Exclusive Grapevine video shows how it went down.
The video, taken this morning by Grapevine intern Christopher Czechowicz, shows first the arrival of police, which prompts a chorus of booing. When members of parliament arrive, the egg-throwing begins.
The protesters on the scene, organised in part by Samstaða Íslendinga (Icelanders United), believe the government is not doing enough to help the economy recover, that they still put the interests of banks before those of Icelandic households, and that the entire housing loan system needs to be re-done.
