Mayoral race front runner, Dagur B. Eggertsson of the Social Democratic Alliance, has said that he would like developers to look elsewhere than the centre of Reykjavík when building hotels, reports Vísir

“Right now 1.100 new hotel rooms are going to be built for the most part in the centre of town and we have supported many of [the developers] with the organisation [of that],” said Dagur in an interview with Stöð Tvö. “This is due to the fact that if the [hotel rooms] are not built it puts pressure on the rental market. The travel industry would then start digging into rental neighbourhoods that are located downtown instead. That’s why we need to build hotels. But I made a pretty clear statement the other day that I think there are enough hotels in the downtown area.”

In the interview Dagur pointed out several other places that could be developed instead such as the area around Hlemmur, Borgartún, Kirkjusand or even neighbouring townships.
