Immigration Declines, But Second Generation Increases

Published March 15, 2011

Statistics Iceland has compiled the latest immigration figures, which show that the number of foreigners in Iceland has decreased over the past year, but the number of second-generation Icelanders has increased.
According to the data, foreign-born residents of Iceland comprised 8.1% of the population in January of this year, numbering 25,693 in all. This is down from 26,171 in January 2010.
However, the number of second-generation Icelanders has increased from 2,254 to 2,582. Combined, first and second generation Icelanders comprise 8.9% of the population.
As has been the case for many years now, Poles are the largest minority in Iceland, numbering 9,463, or 36.8% of all immigrants. The next largest immigrant groups are Lithuanians (5.7%) and Filipinos (5.2%).
Also of note is the fact that foreign women outnumber foreign men, at some 1,000 women for every 957 men.
