From Iceland — Conservatives Would Run City If Elections Were Held Today

Conservatives Would Run City If Elections Were Held Today

Published December 30, 2010

The current coalition of the Best Party and the Social Democrats would not have the votes to maintain a majority, and the Independence Party would again have the mayor’s seat if elections were held today, a new poll shows.
A Gallup poll asked respondents which party they would vote for if elections were held today. 36.9% – the largest percentage – said they would vote for the conservatives. This is an increase of 10% from the previous elections, and would give them six of city council’s 15 seats.
The Best Party, led by mayor Jón Gnarr, received the support of 27.3% of those polled. This takes them down by about 8%, but gives them four seats in city hall.
The Social Democrats saw a slight decrease in support, ranking at 19% of those polled, equating 3 seats in city hall. Thus would the current coalition lose its majority.
The Leftist-Greens held relatively stable at 11.2%, giving them two seats, while the Progressives still don’t have the votes to get a seat on city hall, finishing with a paltry 2.5%. About 3.5% said they would vote for other parties.
