From Iceland — Conservatives Polling Stronger Than Ever

Conservatives Polling Stronger Than Ever

Published August 13, 2010

The Independence Party is polling high enough to match their previous record in the spring of 2008, while other parties either lose some support or remain unchanged.
According to a poll conducted by Capacent, support for the conservatives in July was at 35%, up two points from June. The Independence Party hasn’t polled this high since April 2008. Meanwhile, the Leftist-Greens move in the opposite direction, dropping by two points to 19%.
Other parties remain relatively unchanged. The Social Democrats come in at 24%, the Progressives at 12%, and The Movement at 4%. All others polled said they would vote for other parties, among them The Civic Movement (2%) and The Best Party (2%).
Support for the Social Democrat/Leftist-Green ruling coalition has gone down for the third month in a row, and now ranks at 38%, the lowest support they’ve had since forming an emergency coalition in February 2009.
More women than men support the government (42% to 34% respectively), and Capacent also noticed that support for the government increased with the level of education the person polled received.
