From Iceland — Bonfires Over New Years Eve

Bonfires Over New Years Eve

Published December 30, 2013

With New Years Eve just around the corner, you’ll want to make sure you know where to catch the best bonfires. They are all lit at 20:30, except the one at Úlfarsfell which is lit at 14:30. Be sure to wrap up warm before heading out and stay safe. There are trained firemen on site, but there’s no reason to get careless. Don’t step too close to the fire or throw anything into it, and please, don’t be a dick to others.
There are large bonfires at Ægisíða, Geirsnef, Rauðavatn, Gufunes and Valhúsahæð.
There are also smaller bonfires to be found at Skerjafjörður, Suðurhlíð, by Valbjarnarvöllur, Suðurfell and in Úlfarsfell which starts at 14:30.
As for the rest of the evening, we recommend watching the fireworks from a hill or other high location. Once the clock hits eleven, the whole of Reykjavík should be lit up with beautiful and loud explosions, after which the clubs and bars start filling up.
