About Half Of Icelanders Support New Icesave Deal

Published January 13, 2011

According to the latest poll from Capacent Gallup, about half of Icelanders want parliament to approve the new Icesave deal. InDefence – the lobby that helped kill the previous Icesave deal – believes the new agreement is an improvement on the old one, but still requires work.
The Gallup poll shows that 47% support the idea of parliament approving the new Icesave deal, while only 35% were against it. 17% had no opinion on the matter.
However, about 60% said they were either poorly familiar with the details of the new deal or knew no details at all, while only 17% they felt they understood the new terms.
Support for the Icesave deal varied greatly by political affiliation. 78% of those who support the Social Democrat/Leftist-Green coalition also support the deal’s passage, while only 30% of those supporting opposition parties said the same thing.
In addition, InDefence has released a statement saying that the new deal still does not fulfil what they see as three basic requirements: that paying down the Icesave debt should not be bound by law, that the deal puts responsibility on Iceland, the UK and Holland, and that all three of these countries also share risk.
At the same time, InDefence said that the new deal is an improvement over the old one, especially with regards to lowered interest rates.
A parliamentary vote on the matter is still pending.
