16% Of Icelandic Children Living In Poverty

Published April 16, 2014

According to a new report by Save the Children 10.000 Icelandic children live in under the poverty line, reports Vísir.

The growth of children living under the poverty line has increased rapidly across Europe in the past few years. In Iceland the rate of children living below the poverty line has increased by 2.8% since the economic crash in 2008 and roughly 9-10.000 children currently live in homes where the household income ranks below the poverty line.

Meanwhile other Nordic countries, such as Norway and Finland managed to decrease the number of children living in poverty.

While conducting the research for the report, Save the Children discovered that kids growing up in homes under the poverty line are at higher risk of being subjected to violence and neglect than children living above the poverty line. Children living under the poverty line also experience more fear and feelings of insecurity.

The Europe-wide study revealed that Bulgaria and Romania had the worst rates of child poverty with 52% of children living below the poverty line. Norway has the least child poverty with 12% living under the poverty line.
