NASA took some superb photos of the Eyjafjallajökull eruption which started over a week ago.

One such image, which can be seen here, shows that even from space, lava fountains are visible. The ash and steam rising from the lava create plumes that extend far into the Earth's atmosphere.

The image in the article was taken 24 March, by the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) aboard NASA’s Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite.
