As many are no doubt aware, Israel and Gaza are currently engaged in a military struggle
over the past six days that has so far killed 95 Palestinians and three Israelis.RÚV
reports that Minister of Foreign Affairs Össur Skarphéðinsson has condemned the Israeli attacks on Gaza, saying that the operation was "tragic and unequal [in military force]". He also said that he plans to discuss the matter further with other members of the cabinet tomorrow.
Minister of the Interior Ögmundur Jónasson took matters a step further, saying that Icelanders should be protesting the attacks. When this statement was questioned by conservative MP Ragnheiður Elín Árnadóttir, Össur backed him up, saying Ögmundur has every right to express himself on the subject.
Icelanders are, in fact, planning to protest. A protest demonstration is to be held at the US embassy
at 17:00 today. At the time of this writing, over 1,400 people have joined the event on Facebook.
Protest is also being aimed at the Icelandic government, as a new petition
has been created demanding the Icelandic government call for an international embargo on Israel. Over 2,200 have so far signed this petition.
Two ministers of the Icelandic government have publicly spoken against the Israeli military operation on Gaza. Meanwhile, over 1,400 plan to stage protests in front of the US embassy at 17:00 today.
