Twenty-one year old Jóhanna María Sigmundsdóttir of the Progressive Party is the youngest person to ever be elected to the Parliament of Iceland, RÚV reports.
Jóhanna entered the history books on Saturday night as the election results rolled in and she was elected to one of the 19 seats won by her party. She is 21 years and 303 days old, breaking the record of the previously youngest person in parliament, Gunnar Thorrodsen, who was 23 years and 177 days old. Jóhanna holds a degree in industrial sciences from the Agricultural School in Hvanneyri and sits on the board of the Federation of Young Farmers. Her key issues are communications, policy, employment, agriculture and education.
“I think this is a very good example for young people to show that we can join the democratic process and have our voices heard,” says Jóhanna, who is very grateful for her election.
Another member of the Progressive Party, 68-year old Sigrún Magnúsdóttir, broke another record by becoming the oldest person elected to parliament, according to RÚV.
