The Directorate of Fisheries is preparing to measure how long it takes for Minke and Fin whales to die after being caught, reports mbl.is.

They will be conducting the research over the summer following a request from the North Atlantic Marine Mammal Commission (NAMMCO).

It would seem that neither Iceland’s Marine Research Institute nor the Directorate of Fisheries have collected scientific data on how long it takes for whales to die prior to this request.

The directorate of Fisheries will be consulting with well-known foreign specialists in this field to prepare for the research.
