According to a statement from the Icelandic Transport Authority (ITA), passengers effected by the airport strike yesterday are in some cases entitled to compensation, reports Vísir.

As reported, roughly 400 ISAVIA employees, who run Iceland’s airports, held a half-day strike yesterday from 4 am to 9am. Unless a collective bargaining agreement is made, the next strike is planned for April 23.

The statement was released to inform passengers of their rights and explained that passengers whose flights were delayed or canceled during the strike are very
possibly entitled to compensation.

The ITA warned that some passenger rights are void in the event of a strike, for example, if a person booked a ticket while the strike was on, they have no right to compensation in the duration of that strike.

However, passengers who were scheduled to fly later in the day, so after the strike ended, but who were still delayed due to the strike are possibly entitled to compensation from their airline.

Compensation may include meals and refreshments, depending on the duration of the delay. Passengers who are forced to stay a night or more for the next flight to their destination are entitled to have their hotel accommodation provided, as well as transportation between the hotel and the airport.

Additionally passengers should be offered the possibility to make two phone calls or send messages via fax or email free of charge.

Passengers who have incurred any of these expenses are asked to save their receipts in order to get reimbursement from their airlines.
