Saving Iceland protests Helguvik smelter

Published August 12, 2009

Vehicle access to the site of the Helguvik smelter construction was successfully blocked at 7:00 this morning when three Saving Iceland members chained themselves along the access road thereto. The protest was, however, unsuccessful in blocking pedestrians from entering the site. Simultaneously to the human roadblock action another Saving Iceland activist shackled himself to a crane on the site.
The commencement of the workday at the Helguvik site was postponed for an hour while police spoke with the protestors and clipped their chains. No arrests were made and the protestors vacated the premises.
