President of Iceland, Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, has invited Indonesia to participate in the second conference of the Arctic Circle Assembly, to be held in Reykjavík, October 2014, reports Indonesian news outlet Antara News.

The president made the offer in a meeting with Indonesian Ambassador to Iceland, Yuwono A. Putranto, at his official residence in Bessastaðir.

The ‘Arctic Circle’ is a non-profit organisation chaired by Ólafur Ragnar. The aim of the annual Arctic Circle Assembly is to facilitate dialogue between politicians, businessmen, environmentalists, scientists and other stakeholders and to address issues facing the Arctic as a result of climate change.

In addition to inviting Indonesia to participate in this year’s Arctic Circle Assembly, the president expressed his belief that an increase of the bilateral cooperation in the geothermal field would serve Iceland and Indonesia’s interests.

Iceland established diplomatic ties with Indonesia in 1983.
