Paralympian Rescued From Glacier

World champion downhill skier Sean Rose was three days into his expedition crossing Vatnajökull glacier when he fell ill and became stranded in treacherous weather conditions, reports Metro.

As reported, Rose had planned the trip to Iceland in a bid to raise money for the charity Wings For Life and become the first to cross Vatnajökull glacier by snow kite.

During the crossing however, Rose fell ill and as his fever rose his support team decided to set up camp in order to ride out a growing storm. Upon radioing for help they were informed that the high winds of the storm were too dangerous for the helicopter.

Eventually, the East Iceland Rescue Service reached the group and extracted them.

“What followed was a rollercoaster ride, as the Jeeps crashed through all the snow the glacier could muster,” said Mr Rose’s team-mate Kieron Jansch, who was filming the trip for a documentary.

The trip off the glacier took 5 hours and Rose was hospitalised for several days afterward.

Rose has made it back to the UK where he is recuperating. He recently posted to Facebook: “We failed to reach our final destination. That doesn’t sit well with me, so Mr Vatnajökull we’ve unfinished business.”
