Minister of Finance Steingrímur J. Sigfússon says that the coalition government is not in any danger despite reports that the sale of HS Orka to Magma Energy is causing inter-party tensions, according to mbl.is.
Since the announcement of the sale, some reports have claimed that there have been serious disagreements within the majority government made up of the Social-Democratic Alliance and Left-Green parties. Steingrímur says this is not the case and that they are working to resolve the issue together as they would any other. Meanwhile, several Left-Green MPs have said they will withdraw support for the government if the deal goes through.
Speaking briefly with the press after a meeting today to review the deal, which included Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðadóttir and the Minister of Commerce Gylfi Magnússon, Steingrímur told reporters that the statements made in the media about the coalition are not accurate and that the coalition is working to find a solution.
“This is a complex issue,” he told reporters while exiting the meeting, “There are many legal matters in the energy sector to go over and how to ensure that public ownership and public interest are being taken into account. It has been a concern of the government since the beginning and we will not take it for granted. We are going to try to resolve this issue so that we can uphold our own security as well as public interest.”
He had no further comment to make on the matter.
