National School-Milk Day is being celebrated in Iceland today, September 25, for the 14th year running. Each year on this wholesome holiday, 70,000 pre-school and elementary school children in Iceland are treated to a glass (or two) of milk donated by Icelandic dairy farmers and the MS Iceland Dairy cooperative. It’s estimated that 16,000 liters of milk are drunk by school children on Milk Day.
According to the MS press release, this year’s official Milk Day celebration took place at Hraunvalla School in Hafnafjörður, where 1,100 children between ages two and fifteen gathered to knock back a cold one, as chef Alfreðs Gústafs Maríusson fed them a nourishing meal prepared according to the nutrition recommendations of the Directorate of Health.
Fourth grade children at Hraunvalla also participated in the annual Milk Day drawing competition, in which they submitted art related to the health value of milk. The artwork of children who have participated in the last four years’ drawing competitions will be displayed both in the Kringlan mall in Reykjavík and in Glerátorg mall in Akureyri until the end of this weekend.
The aim of National School Milk Day is to draw children, parents, and school staff’s attention to the importance of milk in children’s diets.
