Iceland’s Traffic Fatality Rate Highest in Five Years

The number of fatal traffic accidents in Iceland during 2013 was the highest in five years. In total 15 people lost their lives, six more than in 2012 mbl.is reports.
Of the deceased, five were children under the age of 18 and traffic accidents are cited as the leading cause of death amongst youths in Iceland.
Ágúst Mogensen with the Accident Investigation Board told mbl.is that in a few cases seat belts were not used. Speeding and driving while under the influence also contributed to some of the collisions.
August 2013 had with the highest rate of fatal accidents with four deaths in the first week of that month alone. The majority of fatal accidents happened on Suðurlandsvegur.
