It is estimated that each Icelander eats about half a kilo of Prince Polo every year, reports Vísir. The Polish Prince Polo, affectionately known as Prins Póló, has been the most popular candy bar in Iceland for 60 years.

Prince Polo was first imported into Iceland in 1955 during a period of heavy import restrictions following a trade agreement between Iceland and Poland.

“[Prince Polo’s] popularity has not dwindled,” said Svava Kristjánsdóttir, marketing rep. for Ásbjörn Ólafsson ehf. who import Prince Polo, “even though consumption per Icelander is not as high as it once was. At its peak around 1970, every Icelander was consuming about one kilo of Prince Polo a year compared to the half kilo per year today.”

Kristjánsdóttir said that Prince Polo sales are still a success despite the decrease in consumption considering the influx in competition from other candy producers after Iceland lifted import restrictions in 1982.
