After petitioning to get the ship Alma turned away from Durban port for carrying 2000 tonnes of fin whale meat, Greenpeace is planning on closely monitoring the ship’s progress, reports Vísir.

“This is one of the largest deliveries of whale meat that we’ve known about for decades,” said Pavel Klinckhamers, a campaign coordinator for Greenpeace. “First they went to Hamburg and Rotterdam with a regular shipping vessel but it has become harder and harder to use these ships because shipping companies are more and more reluctant to transport whale meat. That’s why Hvalur H/F rented this large ship [Alma] themselves, to move all the meat in one go.”

Klinckhamers told Vísir that the ship is now south of Madagascar and that Greenpeace intends to follow Alma until it reaches port in Japan.

“The market is not big there right now.” said Klinckhamers. “According to our information it won’t be sold but put into storage.”
