EU Referendum Petition Ending

The petition created to call upon the Icelandic government to hold a referendum on whether or not to continue accession negotiations with the EU will end this Sunday, reports RÚV

Over 53.000 people have signed the petition which was set up February 23 and scheduled to run 63 days, one day for each member of parliament. 

The petition will be delivered to parliament at the end of April. 

As reported, both parties of the ruling coalition promised a public referendum on continuing accession talks before last year’s elections. Since the ruling coalition has back-pedalled and submitted a proposal to end EU accession talks causing thousands of Icelanders to protest and the creation of the petition.
