In a recent poll, roughly half of Reykjavik residents want Social Democratic Alliance’s Dagur B. Eggertsson as the next mayor, reports mbl.is.
Since the last poll, conducted in November, Eggertsson’s popularity has grown considerably from 33% of voters to 49,9%.
“I’m basically speechless,” said Dagur B. Eggertsson of the results, “This is of course really gratifying.”
Eggertsson served briefly as Mayor of Reykjavík between 2007-2008.
RÚV further reported that the poll, conducted by the University of Iceland’s Social Science Research Institute, revealed the Independence Party’s Halldór Halldórsson in second place with 20% and Bright Future’s S. Björn Blöndal third with 10% of voters.
The election will be held this spring and the new mayoral term will begin on June 15th when much-loved mayor Jón Gnarr hands over the reigns.
